Advices for shuttle tatting equipment
There are several types of shuttles. The choice depends on individual preference:
– single column shuttles like mine on the picture.
– shuttle with a tip at the end of the shuttle. In theory, the tip can catch the thread to make the joins, but with a fine thread, it is much less convenient than a hook. At least, the tip can be useful to undo a node for example.
– shuttles with a hook at one end of the shuttle. This avoids the use of the hook in addition to the shuttle, but the size of the hook is not necessarily adapted to the thread used.
– bobbin shuttles: Simply change the bobbin to change the shuttle thread. On this kind of shuttle, the concern can come from the locking of the bobbin (shuttles of poor quality, pony for example).
The crochet hook is a good size when the thread exactly fills the notch.
Scissors with thin blades
Fine sewing needles for finishing.
Gauges are used to obtain regular picots. Toothpicks, plastic sticks, cardboard strips are perfect templates.
The nylon thread for threading the beads or the fishing line are useful auxiliaries for threading the beads. They can also serve as a magic thread.
Regarding the seed beads, my preference is very much for Miyuki and Toho 15/0. They are perfectly regular, and their size is well suited to fine lace.
For the other pearls, everything is possible: Swarovski, semi-precious pearls, freshwater pearls …
The best result is obtained with 6-strand mercerized cotton.
The Cordonnet Spécial and the Spécial Dentelle by DMC fall into this category, as well as Lizbeth. Lizbeth has the advantage of being in many colors, but its quality is not as good as the DMC brand.
The silk is a wonderful sweetness, a treat to work.
Polyester thread is harder to work than cotton, but it allows you to make jewelry stronger and with better hold.
You will easily find fine, non-elastic and slightly shiny polyester threads. They are perfectly suitable, but must be used in 2, 3 or 4 layers of threads..
Madeira Heavy Metal thread is excellent for tatting, it must be tripled. Same thing for Isacor 40 thread and Madeira Polyneon 40.
Leather threads can also be used. It is currently the most used thread for jewelry making. It makes it possible to obtain jewels much more solid and having a lot of outfit. In addition, these threads do not need to be doubled or tripled. They are therefore easier to use. However, like all polyester threads, it is not recommended for beginners because you have to control the tension of the thread.
There is this type of thread on the shop of the French Association of tatting.
Beware of the DMC Diamant, it is sold for tatting: It is certainly suitable for needle tatting but breaks too easily for the shuttle.
